Second grade is a magnificent grade!

In second grade you will do a project about Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie. It will be making a lighthouse. The lighthouse is called Matinicus Rock and it is in Maine. You will also be visiting a lighthouse called Eastern Point Light. You will go up stairs that look like a spiral. Then after the lighthouse you will go to a castle. The castle’s name is Hammond Castle. It is so cool! It is a real castle! There is a pool inside!

When you’re in second grade, you will visit Plimoth Plantation for a field trip. It is really amazing! You will meet real Indians, and you will meet Pilgrims, except they’re people acting as Pilgrims.

Daffodil Day will be really special in second grade. It will be special because Ms. Jacoby made up Daffodil Day. You also dissect daffodils when they die. It’s really fun!

You will also do Guided Reading. Guided Reading is when you read books at a special time. There are levels for the books. You do Super Reader sheets about the books you read. In Guided Reading you also write what the books’ titles and levels are.

You will also learn how to write in cursive. Cursive looks hard, but it really isn’t. You will learn to write your name in cursive, too.

Pocket Day is fun in second grade. Pocket Day is every 10 days of school. On Pocket Day you make an estimate of how many pockets the class has, including Ms. Jacoby. An estimate is when you make a guess of how many there will be. Then you will add up the pockets and you will figure out what is the answer.

You will learn times in second grade. Times is also called multiplication. Times looks hard, but it really is not, once you get the hang of it. In times 0s, 1s and 2s are really easy.

You will do a lot of things in second grade. I think second grade will be the best grade in your whole life!

Second grade is the very best class in the Peirce School.

In second grade we had a play called Rumpelstiltskin. In that play I acted as a rider and I helped the Queen to find the name of Rumpelstiltskin. Another time we made castles to go along the fairy tales we read.

On Pocket Day we count our pockets. Sometimes we will read our blue reading book. It has many stories.

We had many field trips. One of them was Plimoth Plantation. When we got there we saw many houses and gardens. There were many Indians, too.

Second grade is the most fun you will ever have!

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Caroline. Caroline who? Caroline who will tell you about second grade.

First, let me tell you a little bit about Ms. Jacoby your soon-to-be teacher. She is a phenomenal teacher! She also does awesome things, like Pocket Day. On Pocket Day you add up all the pockets of everybody that’s there (in the room) - even Ms. Jacoby.

Reading is fun, too. There’s something fabulous called Guided Reading where you get to choose some books. You have to write down their titles, read them, and do Super Reader sheets.

We go on wonderful field trips, also, like Plimoth Plantation. I liked when we went on the Mayflower II. Science is great, too, because we have caterpillars that we observe and write about in our Science notebooks.

Yes, this is a year filled with fun! So you see, you will LOVE second grade!

Connor says...
You get strong brain power in second grade! The teacher in second grade is amazing and very wise.

You will really enjoy the Oreo Project in this classroom. Know why? Because you get to learn what a hypothesis means and get to eat double stuffed oreos, too!

In second grade you get journals. If you misspell a word in it, it’s O.K. The field trips will be so exciting and “learnaboutful”, also. The plays you’ll do, why, they’re terrific, like Rumpelstiltskin and The Pilgrim’s Story.

I bet second grade is even more fun than 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades. That’s how much fun second grade is!

Second grade is a magnificent place.

You get to go on many field trips like Hammond Castle. It’s a real castle that we got a tour of. Another place we visited was Plimoth Plantation. I liked the Mayflower replica a lot. It was awesome. We also did a play about the Pilgrims. The clothes that we wore looked like real Pilgrims’ clothing.

We also did fun projects like the castles. We made a castle at home and brought it to school. We put on a play called Rumpelstiltskin. Everyone’s costume looked so pretty. Then we did the Oreo Project. For that we weighed the filling in oreo cookies. It was interesting!

A fun subject in second grade is math. My favorite thing in math is multiplication. I think it’s cool because if you were a little kid you would get mixed up, but now that you’re bigger you can do it. Pocket Day is fun, too. We have to count our pockets and add them up.

Near the end of the year we learn cursive. Some of the letters are hard, but fun! Another fun activity is observing and learning about caterpillars. We got to see the life cycle of the butterfly. It’s awesome!

We also get to do guided reading all year. I think it’s really fun because there’s a lot of great books you can read.

My most favorite thing in second grade is Ms. Jacoby. She is the best teacher in the world!

Now that you know almost all the things we do in second grade, I think you will like it!

Second grade is a magnificent experience. We do lots of projects, like our castles and Matinicus Rock models.

We also go on outstanding field trips, such as Plimoth Plantation and Eastern Point Lighthouse. Plimoth Plantation is awesome because everybody acts like they were really from 1620.

In second grade we learn how to do cursive. Cursive is lots of fun, but it can be challenging.

If you get Ms. Jacoby you’ll be lucky because she’s the best ever. She even has her own website!

Trust me, second grade will be tons of fun!

When I was in first grade, I thought second grade would be horribly hard, but it wasn’t, it was outstanding. When I started second grade it was awesome and so is my teacher.

We did the Oreo Project. We got to find out the difference between double stuff and original oreos. Kind of like a mystery. We also got to eat the oreos after.

We read a book called Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie. It was great. We even got to take it home for a week. We do Writers’ Workshop where you can write about many things. Sometimes you can write about your own topic. I bet you’ll like it!

You will be learning a lot in second grade, so have fun.
P.S. It is terrific!

In second grade we do fun projects. My favorite one was making castles. It was awesome! I also liked going to Plimoth Plantation. I liked the part when we went on the Mayflower replica. I enjoyed going to Hammond Castle, too. We actually got to go inside a real castle!

We also learned cursive in second grade. After you pass the cursive name test, you get to write your name in cursive on all your papers.

Pocket Day is fun. First you guess a number, then you have to count how many pockets you have. Next you add them up with the class to see how many pockets you have altogether.

Second Grade is awesome!

Second grade is incredible and awesome!

In second grade you get to do lots of projects. One of them is an Oreo Cookie Project. You scrape off the cream filling from a regular cookie. Then you take a double stuffed oreo and you do the same thing. Next you weigh the filling from each one and compare them.

After you read and learn about fairy tales you will have a castle project. You have one month to build a castle at home. It can be as tall as you want it to be, but it can only be l2 to l6 inches wide.

In second grade you go on many field trips like Plimoth Plantation. It shows you what it was like in the time of the Pilgrims. The people there pretend to be real Pilgrims, but they are just people dressed up like Pilgrims. At Plimoth Plantation there were real Wampanoag Indians.

You will also do science in second grade. You might observe caterpillars if you do a life cycle of a butterfly. First it starts as an egg, then the egg hatches and out comes the caterpillar. It molts and gets bigger. Then it makes a chrysalis and stays there for about one week before it turns into a butterfly.

You will also do Pocket Day. You will have it every ten days. Pocket Day is when you guess the number of pockets the class has. Then you count the pockets of everyone in class.

As you can see, you will be learning about many interesting things in second grade!

Second grade is a perfect place to be. You get to learn a lot about caterpillars and dissecting daffodils. The plays we put on like Rumpelstiltskin and the Pilgrim’s Story were fabulous. The second grade teacher, Ms. Jacoby, is the best teacher you will have.

Two of my favorite field trips were to Plimoth Plantation and Hammond Castle. You are going to enjoy all the field trips. The class pet guinea pigs are sweet and cute.

Reading and writing is fun. In your journal you will write whatever you want. You will have a blue book to read stories in and you will need a partner.

I hope you will find second grade as wonderful as I did.

There is a grade in Peirce School that is so unbelievable and spectacular, you will never believe it! What is that grade? Second Grade!

Now you will come to a teacher and her splendid classroom 211 and her guinea pig, Kisses! She used to have two, but one named “Hugs” died. :-( Hugs was such a wonderful, super guinea pig. She could do one amazing trick, and it was standing on her hind legs when you gave her a treat or some food!

When you come to second grade, journals are so, so important! You will learn to love writing in your journal. Did you know that journals are very special? Well, they are. They are so special because in the future people can read it and see what happened when you were a kid!

Writers’ Workshop is almost the same as journals, but you don’t write in your journal. Writers’ Workshop is like your own little shop at your table. At your little shop you make stories. You will learn how stories are made, written, illustrated and published. You will do a lot of stories in second grade!

Do you know what Daffodil Day is? Can you believe that Ms. Jacoby made up Daffodil Day at Peirce? Here (in our classroom) Daffodil Day is so much fun! When the flowers die, you get to dissect them, that means to take them apart. If you don’t buy them, well, Ms. Jacoby will give you at least one, because she made it up!

You will have one more pet in your class, instead of only guinea pigs. They are called butterflies! You will love having these beautiful creatures in your room! Did you know that moths make cocoons and butterflies make chrysalises (chrysalides)? Well, when it is time for your caterpillar to become a chyrsalis, you will learn all about these amazing animals - you will even see your chyrsalis turn into a gorgeous butterfly!

The most important person in second grade is...Ms. Jacoby (but Ms. Jacoby says EVERYONE is important)! Your teacher Ms. Jacoby is so much fun, and it’s great working with her and listening with her. I love her, my class loves her, and you will probably love her, too!

You will learn a lot in second grade, and it will be absolutely fantastically fun along the Trail of Discovery!

It’s right around the corner...It’s something not too hard...you’ll come out smarter than before...and you’ll enjoy it a lot. What is it? If you guessed second grade, you’re right!

I think the best field trip in second grade is Plimoth Plantation. You’ll never forget it! You get to see how life was a long time ago. I forgot I was in 2005! You’ll also get to see a replica (a replica is an exact copy) of the Mayflower!

One of the important things you’ll learn in second grade is multiplication. I call it times. The multiplication sign looks like this X. Multiplication is a quick way of doing addition.

In second grade you’ll get small caterpillars. You’ll be surprised how small they are! These caterpillars make chrysalides. You’ll have to prepare your caterpillar’s food. It’s green and mushy.

Here’s something I wanted to learn when I was in first grade...cursive! You’ll learn how to write the whole alphabet in cursive! But most importantly, you’ll learn to write your name in cursive!

A really fun thing you do in second grade is making castles! You can make a candy castle, a paper castle, and more!

So if you were ever scared to go to second grade...there’s nothing to be afraid of! You’ll love it!

Second grade is the best year of school you will have!

Next year, when you’re in second grade you will probably study caterpillars in Science. One project we did was the Oreo Project. It helps you think about balancing and weighing. When you get some cookies you have to scrape off all the filling and weigh all of it. That was a great project.

A field trip we went on was to Hammond Castle. Long ago people used to live in castles. On this field trip we went to visit one. Another field trip we went on was Plimoth Plantation. We saw people planting and got to talk to them. It was fun. We also got to go on the Mayflower. It was great.

Next year, when you to go second grade, I think you will love it!

Second grade will be your favorite grade ever! Ms. Jacoby is a wonderful teacher because she makes learning so fun!

One of your field trips will be to the Symphony. You will have a marvelous time there. The Symphony is perfect for anyone.

You will also read Keep the Light Burning, Abbie. You will create a model of Abbie’s homeland, Matinicus Rock, with the lighthouse on top of it. A few months later, you will make your own castle!

Then you get caterpillars. You will have a great time with them! You will see them make their chrysalis.

Writing in a journal is something you’ll enjoy. You’ll get one journal for the field trips and one for just anytime at all. The journal for the field trips contains all the things you need for the trip.

In Writers’ Workshop we write many interesting stories and illustrate them.

Do you want to go to second grade? I bet you do!

You’ll have a splendid time in second grade. This year we had a fun Oreo Cookie Project. We weighed the filling in double stuffed oreos for an experiment and at the end we got to eat them.

Pocket Day is a time when you guess how many pockets the class has and you will want to guess a high number. Cursive writing is fun because when you pass the cursive name test you can write your name in cursive on any paper.

One of the field trips we went on was to Plimoth Plantation. When I was there I got to sit in a canoe and have a picture taken with Native Americans.

Ms. Jacoby is an amazing teacher. You can learn anything you want from her. Now that you have read this, are you excited about second grade?

Rikki says...
Second grade is the most marvelous grade in the whole school.

In second grade you get to do projects like Matinicus Rock Lighthouse. You paint a little cereal box and toilet paper rolls gray and glue them altogether. After that you collect small sized rocks. Then you put a platform under the house and put sand on it.

In second grade we go on a lot of field trips. I loved Eastern Point Light. I think you will, too. It was an enormous lighthouse. There was a tiny house connected to this giant. There is a very long, dark, rusty looking staircase that leads up to the top. You climb up a short ladder to get outside of it. Then you look out at a beautiful ocean and if you look down you will see your class.

You don’t know that cursive is hard. When I came into second grade I did not know any cursive at all and neither will you. I thought scribbling was cursive, but it’s not. You have to put slants and curves in cursive. It’s hard, but you will get the hang of it.

Pocket Day is when you count how many pockets each kid in your class has. You guess how many there will be altogether and then count them all up.

Because Ms. Jacoby invented Daffodil Day, she likes for everyone in her class to buy at least one daffodil. When it is Daffodil Day, we get to take some home because our Moms and Dads order them. They are blooming like the gigantic, elegant, lighthearted sun. After we take them home Ms. Jacoby has leftover ones so we wait a couple of days and when they’ve finally died the whole class dissects them. You get a piece of paper that tells you every part about a daffodil and what they really do look like inside. My class read a poem about a great big field of yellow daffodils stretching themselves towards the round sun. Ms. Jacoby will show you a huge hill that inspired this poem. You could go onto her website and find it.

Also, on her website, you can see our castles and a picture of our class pets, Hugs and Kisses. They’re incredibly cute. There’s even a jigsaw puzzle about our guinea pigs.

There are so many things to do, and now you know that in second grade learning is very fun!

Every ten days we have Pocket Day. Pocket Day is fun because you count your pockets and guess how many pockets the class has.

Daffodil Day is important because the money we collect for selling daffodils goes to the American Cancer Society.

I think you can tell how much I love second grade!

Don’t be blue, second grade is coming to you!

You will not believe how many field trips you will have in second grade. Let me tell you... 5 field trips, can you believe it? I want to tell you about two of them. The first one is a visit to a real castle where you will see some amazing things. The guide who takes you around the castle is pretty funny and I think you will enjoy that. At Plimoth Plantation you will get to see real Indians and learn a lot about them. You will take a bus ride to see an exact replica of the Mayflower. That’s the ship that the Pilgrims sailed in.

If you are in Ms. Jacoby’s class you will have a lot of fun. She is a kind and generous teacher to have.

I don’t want to tell you everything, except that second grade is awesome!

Second grade has been interesting to me from the first day to now.

Second grade is fascinating when doing math or reading. It’s kind of hard, but when you get the hang of it, it’s fun. For science we study about tiny caterpillars. We have journals that we write in. We also have to draw a scientific diagram.

In second grade you’ll get to see a guinea pig. They are very fun to watch. In Ms. Jacoby’s class there is something called guinea pig people who refill the water.

We went on many field trips. One of our field trips was to Plimoth Plantation. You’ll get to see and talk to Indians and Pilgrims.

Also in second grade you get to do the oreo project. You have to weigh the filling of the regular oreo cookie and compare it with the double stuffed ones.

As you can tell, second grade is very fun!
