Our Second Grade Literacy Program consists of:

Scholastic Guided Reading
Selections from Houghton Mifflin's Literary Reader
Selected trade books
Phonics from Fundations
Comprehension Strategies
Write Away - a handbook for writing - and Write Source 2
Writers' Workshop - see samples of Student Writing
Write Traits - using the Six Traits
and weekly Spelling words
(please see Spelling City and Spelling Spot for details)

To further enhance our program, we:

have an extensive classroom Library Corner for self-selected reading
enjoy "Study Buddies" for partner reading and other work
incorporate Reader's Theater
listen to stories at our Listening Center
participate in Internet Projects with a literacy focus
(please see below)

Children are expected to read for at least 20 minutes daily at home,
and are encouraged to have library cards and use them frequently.
